It has been 30 anniversary since the first Toy Story movie was released, launching the animation giant as a leading film company and introducing audiences to iconic characters like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a brief look into the plot but leaving viewers wondering how it will resolve the conclusion of Toy Story 4.
The preview reveals the young girl — who inherited Andy's toys when he left for college — receiving a brand new toy, one that terrifies the familiar toy group. She gets her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.
Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the characters seem to view it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it likely will.
One thing the trailer doesn't touch on is why Woody is back with his friends in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), traveling with a fair and assisting giveaway items locate loving owners.
Surely, Pixar will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him show up in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, however. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have come back with him. And where is Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?
At the very least, some elements are carrying over from the earlier movie. The last thing Woody did before departing for his new life was hand over his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), leaving her as the leader of Bonnie's bedroom. The clip displays the badge pinned to her shirt.
Hopefully she is remains the key figure among the toys.
Toy Story 5 debuts on the scheduled date.
