The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
