Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal at Spectators

The NFL has imposed a hefty $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he claims was an “unintentional” obscene gesture made toward attendees during a recent game at MetLife Stadium.

Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.

“That was regrettable. That was kind of an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”

He further clarified that the gesture was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the incorrect digit,” he noted. “It was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”

League Precedent for Proprietor Fines

This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent examples involve:

  • Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in early 2024.
  • Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.

Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, so the fine manageable for the wealthy owner.

Recent Issues and Media Attention

The incident follows a controversial preseason for Jones, who encountered widespread backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt star pass rusher Parsons to the Packers.

Moreover, Jones was a prominent subject in a Netflix documentary that examined his role in developing the Cowboys into the globe’s most valuable athletic organization, even with its modern-era championship drought.

The NFL’s decision to fine Jones highlights its continuing initiative to uphold proper behavior among all franchise representatives, irrespective of their position or wealth.
