A bettor profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of NicolĂ¡s Maduro shortly prior to it was officially announced, raising questions about whether someone profited from non-public details of the US operation.
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be no longer in control by the end of January increased in the time leading up to former President Trump declared on the weekend that Maduro had been apprehended.
One account, which became a member last month and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436,000 from a modest bet of $32.5K.
The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Market statistics shows that traders estimated the likelihood of a political change at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.
However these probabilities had climbed to 11% by late Friday night and surged in the early hours of the next day, indicating a sudden change in market sentiment immediately prior to the social media post was made.
"That trade has all the signs of a bet based on inside information," commented an industry expert.
A small number of other individuals also profited tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.
Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.
Proposed legislation put forward on recently seeks to ban public officials from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.
Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the United States, with participants able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.
This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.
Trading on insider information is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting industry.
A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
